I like that it's 1.2.12 today...

I like that today is the beginning (dare I say, 'launch') of something super special to me and a very long time in the creating.

My little 'paperie' is being built behind the scenes...I'm dressing and decorating the virtual walls and hope that by the end of the month there will be a few treats on the shelves to purchase! Slowly, slowly mind as the perfectionist in me embraces the loveliness that imperfection can be!

Oh my...how wonderfully exciting and somewhat daunting all at once!

Sweet Zoraya turned one last Friday and there was a party to celebrate on Saturday...oh what fun we had! There was one very tired little lady Saturday evening but she was so, so good...only smiles and giggles all day through.

Sometimes you stumble across the loveliest of people with the most wonderful sense of style...that something that is just 'there'...something that makes your heart sing whenever you encounter their work and words. Philippa Stanton is one of those gorgeous people. I first came across her table on instagram...and yes, it makes me smile (and my heart sing!) every time she shares a picture of it and the daily treasures it holds. There are of course, other fabulous and equally captivating pictures too, but her table...it has a beautiful spirit that I simply adore.

Philippa also has a penchant for vintage maps...oh to imagine wandering the streets of London in times gone by! Philippa uses these maps to create unique and individual lamps...and so I commissioned one. My request...well, let me show you in time...there's a story of course and it's quite possibly one of my most treasured possessions now!

The little brown box that carried my lamp across the seas came with a calendar featuring her lovely table and a sweet note, all tied with vintage map bunting...an early Christmas present indeed!

A vintage water cracker box, rusting around the edges, filled with stamps from every corner of the globe. I knew this was in Dad's garage, I'd seen it many times before, but now I wanted to 'experience' it's contents.

And so he brought it around, and over a few evenings I explored the world...to places that no longer exist (in name at least), to places that mean so much to me and hold so many precious memories, to places that sound exotic...some that sadly are now war torn and others recovering from such tragedy.

There are a few that go back many years...to the late thirties, there are some that are quite quirky, many are more conservative and traditional. All are works of art.

I soaked the remains of envelopes from their reverse. Part of me didn't want to...there was hand writing belonging to those that I have loved and lost - the knowledge that, despite the years gone by, we had both touched this scrap of paper and admired the very same stamp. There was a history far greater than the date on the stamp...there were stories of life that these little stamps helped to transport across the oceans, between continents. More often than not, there was a letter or aerogram ending with 'loads of love and hugs' attached to these lovely stamps.

I watched my Mum tear the corner of envelopes and keep the stamps every time we received mail...I catch myself still doing it now. I can only imagine the joy these little stamps delivered.

There is one little story I'll share in time...a little project for a few of these stamps that will see them travel across the seas once more and complete the loveliest of circles.

It was the perfectly lovely (and practical too) ellison bag that stole my heart! Beautifully wrapped, it has travelled across the oceans and is now part of my everyday.

I enjoy pottering in the kitchen...sometimes. I must have time...time to enjoy the process and a 'want' to do so. I'm lucky that my lovely Dad is such a good cook and my brother is a chef (and only a phone call away!). I also learnt from my dear Mother that mastering the basics is so very important, especially when cooking isn't your 'thing'. Perhaps she was spoilt with Dad spending time in the kitchen!

One of the first things that went into my 'glory box' was the Edmond's Cook Book...every good Kiwi girl should have one! It's all about the basics and I use it all the time. But this Donna Hay book, it's such a delight to turn the pages...delicious looking treats jump out at you. I love Donna Hay and her style...fresh and simple and achievable! I have a few of her beautiful recipe books, but I think I also 'need' this one...

Oh and I'm coveting this too!

Time to potter in the garden...thrilled that this climbing rose, a cutting from my lovely Dad's garden, is winding its way across my bbq area and in full bloom.

There is something just so wonderful about receiving 'real' mail in the post. The knowledge that someone you know and love has touched the paper, perhaps even the slightest fragrance from their perfume is revealed within the pages. Knowing that there has been days in between when the stories were written on paper and the delivery at the other end...where life has gone on. And yet, the moment the envelope is opened time steps back...just for a few moments.

I have always loved sending and receiving letters in the mail. Perhaps that comes from growing up overseas before the internet gave us such instant contact with people. As a little girl there was no greater treat than a letter from one of my chums at 'home'. And the delight on my Mother's face when an aerogram from my Grandmother arrived. My Father made the best postman ever (the initial deliveries were made to his office).

Encouraging and reigniting the passion for this lovely tradition is the gorgeous Postale Society. It is such a treat when Frederick stops by on his quaint bicycle with a delivery...

I can hardly wait for the next time I hear that bicycle bell...even if it is in my imagination.

It was a grey day, yet the sun kept trying to peek through the clouds and in that golden hour before twilight meets dusk, when it's still 'day time', there was this amazingly enchanting light.

There was a chill in the air, although it wasn't cold. The breeze was brisk yet still so gentle. The sea rolled in but with a calm rhythm.

As I turned to return from my stroll in the sand, back to reality...there was the prettiest of rainbows. A magical moment when time stood still.

Oh my...I think I'm just a little more than smitten! My little camellia shrub, 'star above', is quite the little favourite of mine. It was the first plant that went into my garden and was in memory of my darling mother. It is soft and delicate and the prettiest of pretty...much like my mother, my star above.

The Old Museum Building is just the perfect place for the wonderful Finders Keepers Markets...the beautiful old building compliments the lovely creations displayed within so charmingly.

I wandered, and marveled, and wandered some more at all the creativity surrounding me. There were so many beautiful stalls, so much inspiration...and so many people. I wanted to capture the Postal Society's post box, vintage stamps and beautifully hand written postcards from a bygone era. To capture the spirit of friendship between Kylie and Sarah and their little 'wait' collaboration. To share the charm of letterpress loveliness by Bespoke Press. And right next to that little post box...loose.leaf paper and oldyarns.

But there were so many people and I didn't want to get in the way of someone taking it all in...so here's just a few photographs of this glorious old building and the delights within and some of the sweet purchases that came home with me.

I have a nasty flu bug so there's been lots of enforced quiet time - really rather nice to snuggle in and be cosy in winter (if only I wasn't sneezing!). Molly has loved the company too.

There's been plenty of hot lemon and honey drinks (and a dash of brandy at night...for medicinal purposes of course!). So nice to use lemons picked fresh, straight from the tree.

And the fragrance of lavender, such a comfort for me. This gorgeous posy, a little gift from a someone dear.

road tripping...

A little local exploring...a day trip with Dad. It's the end of the apple season and Dad really fancied an explore of Stanthorpe...apple country! It is further than 'just down the road'...in total I drove 525km yesterday (I don't travel well as a passenger). I have to admit to being somewhat disappointed by this little country town - I expected big deciduous trees filled with autumn colours, more charm and something rather quaint (and adorable antique shops to rummage through). I'm sure it's full of many characters with wonderful stories to tell and is a welcome stop to those on longer journeys...it just didn't live up to my expectations. After all the rain we've had over the last few months we drove for many, many kilometres through very flat, dry Australian land. I wonder why I imagined it to be much more lush and green and more rolling type countryside?

However, whilst winding our way through the mountain range along another route home, we stopped at Queen Mary Falls. It was so nice to breathe in the cool fresh air, hear the trickling of water as it meandered towards the falls and then the thunderous roar as it spilled down the rock face. I'm pleased we stopped.

Oh and the apples...the best I've had in Australia. Though I've concluded there is nothing better than an apple picked straight from the tree in New Zealand!

I was barely six, when, on a cold winter's night in Christchurch, my mother woke me to watch Lady Diana marry Prince Charles...it was close to midnight. My father had made us all his leek and potato soup for supper...the fire was going and it was cosy inside. And it was magical...

Last night I made that very same soup, the autumn air had quite the nip about it...my father joined me and it was cosy inside. I felt my mother's spirit around as she watched with us.

Once more, some thirty years on, I watched the pomp and ceremony...the magic of another Royal Wedding...and wasn't it breath-taking? William looked ever so dashing and Kate was beautifully elegant...and they looked so very happy. I wish them a fairytale happy ever after...

Did you guess? I think nearly every child in New Zealand has a buzzy bee...or at least, my generation certainly did. They become a little battered and scratched with age and love and yet that makes them all the more appealing. I wonder where the one my brother and I shared got to...perhaps I should hunt in Dad's garage! I hope this little guy brings smiles to Zoraya's little face as she starts to toddle around in the months to come - he's certainly very cheery!

I'm completely smitten with these books...aren't they delightful? I couldn't choose just one...they look so much prettier together. Such wonderful childhood stories captured so beautifully in between these covers. There's The Secret Garden, Wind in the Willows, Peter Pan, Robin Hood, Huckleberry Finn...and of course my favourite, Anne of Green Gables. I do adore this story...the wonderfully honest Anne (spelt with an 'e') Shirley and the charmingly handsome Gilbert Blythe. I think I may have fallen, ever so slightly, in love with Gil...

Pineapple picked fresh from Dad's garden. The scent, the taste...so juicy and sweet. Perhaps the most delicious pineapples I've ever eaten were in Brunei...we had them so often. They were almost an everyday staple...and they were divine beyond words. It's like a mango...you've got to chase the juice down your arms - it's the best way to enjoy these tropical fruits. Dad, this was a good as those Brunei ones!

My lovely brother and his gorgeous wife hosted a little party in the park on Sunday to welcome Zoraya. There were bbq delights, summer salads and sweet treats...and of course pink balloons! I had fun making some chocolate cupcakes, complete with tiny flags adorned with 'Zoraya' and a sparkly star. The day was filled with snuggles and giggles and little people running around in the sunshine...bliss.

Just another ordinary day in Christchurch. Workers on their lunch break leave the office to grab a bite. Shoppers go about their daily business. Tourists at the cathedral - the majestic 19th-century beauty that came to symbolise a city - enjoy the view from the spire.

Just another day, no different from the one before.

Then, at 12.51pm, it hit.

The 6.3 magnitude earthquake that brought a city to its knees and broke a nation's heart. Our darkest day. A disaster beyond comprehension that has left hundreds missing, scores dead and ruined countless lives. Hopes have faded and dreams have crumbled, much like that once-mighty cathedral. So many lives, so much loss, the sorrow is almost too much to bear. The little boy who never made it to his six-month birthday. The brother who was due to give his sister away at her wedding. The father who left home to get groceries, never to return to his wife and their children.

The girl in the rubble who texted her father in China to tell him she was trapped. The little sister whose loving brother just wants her to come home. These are the victims, these are their stories. And we will remember them.

Dreams, after all, take time...but soon, my friends there will be a whole lot more to share...

I had the most amazing sewing lesson with my dear friend's Mum a few weeks ago...absolutely brilliant. I came away inspired and ready to practise my little heart out...but the days are melding once again. I'm a terrible student and haven't managed any 'homework'...when speaking to Christine yesterday I had to admit my failings! But it's not for lack of wanting...I just need to allow myself time and not rush it or my patience will be tested!

I fell in love with this candy striped material...isn't it pretty? But stripes are possibly just a little too ambitious of me...not the most ideal pattern for (perfectionist) beginners right? The inspiration also took me to my mother's sewing box and her trusty scissors and measuring tape - the scissors came up a treat when I had them cleaned and sharpened. I'm hoping her love will help me keep calm when my first attempts might be a little short of 'just right'!

My heart is still bursting with such love for Zoraya...she's beautiful. I savour every single cuddle and snuggle that I have...don't new babies just smell delicious?

It's been fun spoiling her rotten...so many pretty things and such sweet little toys. She arrived at 2.24am and my lovely Dad was out shopping for 'pink delights' by 8.30am, his treats lovingly wrapped and placed in an adorable 'baby' bag. I'd spied this cute little elephant at Love Loans + Linens some months back...perfect for a boy or a girl! As my sister-in-law has a soft spot for elephants, he's brought much entertainment to those that watch him toddling off down his little path!

And so I eagerly await the next round of hugs and kisses...

It's still raining. It's torrential at times but I am eternally grateful that my little home, and those of my family and friends are safe...it's dry inside. I'm thankful that Molly is with me and is putting little muddy paw prints on the floor from one end of the house to the other...my floor is not under water, Molly is not scared or swept away.

My heart goes out to those nearby who are not so lucky. To those who are about to have the longest of nights as they wait. Wait to see how high the waters will rise, how many precious possessions and memories that may get washed away...

Flowers from my gorgeous Dad...freshly picked from his garden. Aren't they the most beautiful of cornflour blues? I so adore this shade of hydrangea...so, so different to the deep pink ones in my garden.

Such an appropriate colour too...a little voice woke me this morning on the end of the telephone..."Mummy's had the baby, a boy...his name is Robbie...yes, I've nursed him, he's quite heavy". My sweet God-daughter Olivia, bless her little cotton socks, on the arrival of her new baby brother. Isn't she lucky - an older brother and a baby one too! Thankfully, the snow had eased slightly and the midwife didn't have to come by the farm in a tractor!

It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas...

The tree is decorated...the baubles dancing in the soft glow of the tiny lights and a few little presents from afar nestled at the base. It's rainy and (unseasonably) cool outside...one could almost imagine going out into the world to see a winter wonderland...and feel a snowflake falling, resting against one's cheek.

These sweet snowflakes above...so delicate and sumptuous simply melt in your mouth. Much like a snowflake. They are divine and a thoughtful gift from a lovely someone.

Today has been the most loveliest of days! A visit to the Finders Keepers markets in Brisbane has made me giddy with excitement and inspired so I'm almost bursting. Such lovely, lovely treasures to behold...and whilst I'd like to keep them all (and show you too), some are gifts so I must keep them surprises! There were new stalls to admire and favourites to return to...happy smiles, sweet little chats and a feast for the eyes more than I can describe!

My brown paper bags included little somethings from paper boat press, Bespoke Press, Loose Leaf Paper, Udessi and Little Jane St but truly, it could have included so many more.

And then there were chats and coffee with two dear friends...

I think it must be close to five years since I've picked up some embroidery threads...once I got into the rhythm I enjoyed it immensely. Each stitch wrapped with love and carefully considered, my mind absorbed by the rhythm and removed from the roller coaster ride it's been experiencing of late. For every stitch I wound to form my little stars, I unwound the complex thoughts swirling around in my head. Bliss indeed!

It's not perfect, in fact far from it, but it really is bursting with love.

The sun is shining, the sky is blue, the birds are singing such wonderful songs and the air is thick with the smell of jasmin...quite possibly the perfect type of Saturday. And there was time to wrap nice presents, pick some lovely blooms (the first of the season), sew a little something for the little bundle-to-be and drink some tea.

My beautiful hometown of Christchurch is still experiencing severe after-shocks a month after the devastating earthquake. Such a lovely city with gorgeous historical buildings, pretty parks and special people...the destruction is difficult to see. With strength and grace, you will rebuild and mend and your former glory will be on show once more.

It's dawned on me that the end of October isn't that far away...and I've been procrastinating! For someone generally very organised, I've left my tax return to the last minute. Ordinarily, it's not that hard or even difficult to bundle up my 'bits' and send it off to the tax agent - but this year, I'm building a business and it is complicated and it is time consuming and it doesn't interest me one little bit! In an effort not to be afflicted with the same daunting task next year, I've built spreadsheets, entered data, filed and generally got things in order! And I feel better for it...and it's one big hurdle in working through this new adventure I'm embarking on...it's beginning to feel real! So tomorrow I hope to post everything off and then begin on the much more exciting aspect...creating!

In order to escape from the ho-hum of the paperwork pile I did spend this morning out in the garden. All this rain may have encouraged the weeds but it certainly ensured there a lots of lovely blooms and the grass is the most vibrant of greens! The flame tree is budding, the grape vine is covering the pergola once more and I think the wisteria is soon to flower...the sun was shining and it was truly glorious.

Oh my...do you think this rain will ever stop? Whilst I may love being at home in the rain, Molly is a little put out now - no walks, little hidy-holes damp and the grass ever so soggy!

But the garden, in particular the veggie patch, is thriving - before long we'll be feasting on beans. Nestled against some fresh baramundi sprinkled with rosemary and lemon rind (from the garden too, of course!) wrapped in prosciutto. Placed on a small serving of mashed potato and drizzled with lemon mayonnaise...oh yes please!

The sun managed to peek between the clouds...resting on the little clouds on my coffee table. Such pretty shadows to behold. And then a little parcel to savour...yes, more loveliness from sweet Kylie - serendipitous wouldn't you say?

If only I could share the divine perfume from the roses...my little home is filled with the sweetest of fragrances!

I've long admired this book...it is so beautifully presented and comes complete with patterns. Now I have a copy of my very own. And, I've bought a sewing machine - very basic, but that's all I require for I am but a beginner (at the very earliest of stages)! I admire, and am greatly inspired by Christie - what gorgeous, gorgeous pieces she creates and makes. I think these lovely throw pillows might be my first serious attempt at sewing...what do you think? What makes this book is the beautiful fabrics...I'll be looking out for similar linens and prints as they really are so pretty.

A small repair meant that my paints found the light of day once more! It seems some tiny little fingers and an inquisitive mind combined for a little accident...and so a long overdue repair was finally completed. I've only done a few name canvases for friends but they really are quite fun.

And to smell the paint and feel the brush between my fingers again, ever so briefly, was wonderful. Am I inspired... definitely!

winter wonderland

Saturday we went up the mountain to share in the delights of winter gardens. Being tropical, our winter wonderlands are not gorgeous meadows covered in snow with gracious old oak trees, strong empty boughs dusted with snow and tiny snow drops underfoot. I can only imagine such a scene enjoyed from within the walls of a sweet little English cottage, a roaring fire nearby. It's funny what one imagines and dreams about sometimes...

Our winter wonderland was almost spring-like...there were daffodils, jonquils, tulips, blossom and more. But there were the tiniest and prettiest of snow drops too...and I was in a land far, far away once more.

Started with a mixture of super delicious produce from the garden... these carrots are the brightest of orange, crisp and so full of flavour; the tomatoes so sweet and juicy! There was cabbage too...and spring onions...oh and the herbs! It really is such a treat to pop outside and harvest dinner.

There were the winter gardens to explore on the mountain, a lazy family breakfast in the morning sun and quiet afternoons creating and pottering with lovely music to sooth the soul.

And not to forget...an All Black win!

No. So I've spent time in a little corner of my home just pondering. I think it's partly to do with the explosion of excitement tinged with such sadness at the arrival of a little bundle of joy. Such a lovely name for the prettiest of flowers. This little Camellia was the very first thing I planted in my garden when my home was finished...there is a very special star above that watches over us. My
beautiful Mum didn't quite see my home complete and yet she is all around...always.

Tonight, if you look up, that most gorgeous of stars is twinkling oh so bright for there is to be a little one join my family...I know that star above is bursting with pride and showering us with love.

Oh my, another little doorstep delivery! I'm so utterly spoilt! This sweet little guy came at just the right time. I've never lost sight of my dreams and always follow them passionately, but sometimes I become distracted. Sometimes everyday life takes hold and sometimes I'm guilty of 'perfection paralysis'. And so tomorrow I will make time to be creative, to finish at least one of the endeavours for my little paperie. I'll try to remember it's the idiosyncrasies and slight imperfections that make each piece individual, that makes them just so. And I'll write a list of all the wonderful images and ideas that are flying around in my head...I've a little dream to follow after all!

Oh...and isn't the texture of this envelope just divine? I can't help but touch it over and over.

cooling. Quite the little family favourite...and quite possibly the easiest savoury pie ever! I think it's safe to say it's a 'kiwi' specialty...egg and bacon pie! Only in New Zealand would I dare to try a bought one - nowhere else comes close...except perhaps one cooling by the kitchen window!

And the gorgeous dish...another favourite! A gift from my lovely Dad when last he was in Toulouse. Although rather small, it's size is deceptive and it's uses and the creations that come out of it are endless!

I think lunch is ready for the next couple of days at least...if I can wait that long!

doorstep deliveries

There have been some sweet little deliveries left on my doorstep over the last few weeks. So much nicer than those rather horrid envelopes with clear windows! These gorgeous 'somethings' came from faraway and oh so close...birthday surprises to treasure.

The scent of the daffodils was lovely...they were so tiny and yet so perfect and cheery. They came wrapped with love from my dear, dear friend and my adorable god children - all the way from England. Such a nice surprise just before my birthday.

And Pia's book. Oh, how I've wanted this so! To escape reality and wander the backstreets of Amsterdam. Exploring, admiring and being inspired by the very talented artisans featured throughout this

pretty little book - quite the masterpiece in itself. It arrived only two days ago and I'm still wandering through each page...To my wonderful brother and his beautiful wife - thank you! It is certainly another treasure to add to my collection!

Delicious delights, freshly picked from my garden! Perfect for a Sunday BBQ with friends and family...complimented with good wine of course!

Then late afternoon, as it cooled right down, I baked banana and coconut cake followed by tomato and celery soup for supper...so nice in my cosy little home with lovely music playing in the background and one sleepy pup curled up on her bed. Isn't that what Sundays are all about?

I had such nice compliments about my home this afternoon too which made me glow inside...I'm rather fond of it myself!

On the weekend I went up the Mountain where the air was cooler and the trees were ablaze with Autumn colour. Greens and reds and browns and yellows...some floating from the trees resting gently on the ground below creating a spectacular carpet underfoot. With open gardens and stunning views across to the coast, it really was such a beautiful way to spend a Sunday. Oh...and the sky...it was the most brilliant blue. Maybe I'll share it's brilliance tomorrow...
